Some good news and bad news…..
Bad news first….The doctor in Ethiopia believes that Noah has an enlarged heart. Because of the chest x-rays they’ve been taking to rule out pneumonia, they said that his heart looks enlarged. This obviously was not the best news for us to digest.
now the good news….After some research we discovered that an enlarged heart is treatable and typically temporary. Jeanne talked to a nutritionist and when we described all of Noah’s symptoms, she told her that it sounds very typical of refeeding syndrome.
Refeeding Syndrome is when you give someone who has been starved or malnourished too much food. The conventional thinking is to give them a lot of food to get them back healthy. This is actually detrimental to their health. Too much food can result in low white and red blood counts. Refeeding syndrome can also cause a heart to appear enlarged, respiratory problems, swelling of stomach and extremities, and sometimes flu like symptoms. All the symptoms that Noah now has. And after talking with the other families who are adopting kids that were malnourished from the same orphanage as ours, we learned they are exhibiting the same symptoms.
We have notified the medical staff at Acacia Village of this as a possible cause for the kids’ ailments. We also met with our pediatrician here in the states and he reviewed all of Noah’s medical records. He said that the doctors in Ethiopia are doing the correct procedures to treat his symptoms.
Please keep praying for Noah and for all the kids there at Acacia Village.
